Helping Someone Overcome Addiction

Do you know a person (partner, sibling, child, friend) who needs help to overcome their addiction? Here is our complete guidance on how you can help them in a balanced way. After this post, please also read our latest and refined post on the same topic, titled Helping Someone to Free from Addiction (Jan 2025)

Introduction

Helping someone overcome alcohol addiction requires patience, understanding, and consistent support. Start by encouraging open and non-judgmental communication to help them 'feel at comfort' sharing their struggles. Offer emotional support by being present, celebrating small victories, and helping them stay motivated. Avoid enabling their behavior by setting clear boundaries, and remember to care for your own well-being during the process. Compassion and encouragement can make a significant difference in their journey to recovery & healing.

We understand and feel compassion for your situation. But worry not now, for you are at God's home. You will find all help & guidance right here. Not only shall we guide you on this, but show you how you can be an 'angel' in your brother's life.

Note: The following guidance was written as a guidance for someone who contacted us regarding her brother's alcohol addiction. Our guidance is the SAME for any form of relationship you may share with the person needing help with addiction.

First and above allโ€”in order to help another, you must 'detach' yourself from the situation, and fill yourself with the ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ฆ and ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ that is 'needed' to help someone suffering with addiction.

๐ŸSo, our first advise is: Remove yourself from the situation for a moment, and act as if you are ๐†๐จ๐'๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฅ who is here only to help that soul overcome this habitโ€”๐ญ๐จ ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž, ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ž, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ. A large part of this "healing process" for your brother's soul... is healing & empowering yourself first, because you need to be healed from the past experiences before you may become a help. This healing process asks you to be ๐š๐šŽ๐š๐šŽ๐š›๐š–๐š’๐š—๐šŽ๐š and ๐š™๐šŠ๐š๐š’๐šŽ๐š—๐š. So are you?

If you are... then here is a way๐Ÿ‘‰

Try and wake up early in the morning (4am is best).

As you detach and empower yourself, now it is time to 'talk' with your brother... Find the best time for this... find a quiet room. Again 'morning time' is best for this.

โžฅExplain him how this 'alcohol addiction' is affecting his health, his relationships, and your family as whole.

โžฅMake him remember the "good time" before he got this addiction started.

โžฅLet him 're-experience' how better his life was before this.

๐™‰๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™š: Approach with a 'detached' and 'compassionate' vision (be gentle, go slow, do not argue)

As you convince him to think about leaving this addiction... it is now time to show the way HOW this can be done.

๐ŸŒณThere are many good ways. Here are our suggestions:

๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐Ÿญ: "Online Group"

Connect him to ๐š˜๐š—๐š•๐š’๐š—๐šŽ ๐š๐š›๐š˜๐šž๐š™๐šœ of people who are going through the same journey of overcoming their alcohol (or any kind of) addiction. This will 'empower' your brother in many ways, as he finds company of like-minded people which will keep him ๐š’๐š—๐šœ๐š™๐š’๐š›๐šŽ๐š ๐šŠ๐š—๐š ๐š–๐š˜๐š๐š’๐šŸ๐šŠ๐š๐šŽ๐š.

If possible for you, approach a Therapist or a Counselor who specializes in helping with addiction. (make this optional)

You see--mostly those who indulge in alcohol are ones who are unhappy with their life, relationship, and workplace; or are going through emotional issues; or are engaged in a bad company of friends. Therefore, it is vital for you to understand their perspective/situation in order to help them the right way.

๐ŸŒฟDo the following as a 'support' for them to bring this change:

โžฅRemove all alcohol from your home.

โžฅMake changes in their ๐•“๐•–๐••๐•ฃ๐• ๐• ๐•ž (clean the bedroom nicely & create more 'open' space)

โžฅOnly healthy, vegetarian food is cooked for the family. No outside food for 3 or 4 weeks.

โžฅMake him 'feel included' (do not leave him alone, or treat him like a patient)

โžฅBring ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ซ๐˜ฐ๐˜บ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด (spend more time together. Eat at least 2 meals together as a family)

โžฅTo make sure he stays willing for this journey of transformation, make sure he leaves his old lifestyle and company of friends.

All above points are 'important' for the transformation to take place smoothly. Make sure you follow this as it is, and ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ฒ ๐ž๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐  during your brother's journey.

๐ŸŒทAs he becomes better, we invite you to bring him (and your whole family) to a Find one nearby using our centre locator (International) or India centres
